ABOUT
婆婆 Popo is an upbeat, illustrated zine by Malaysian-Chinese zinemaker, Good Bad English. Centred on the familiar behaviours and experiences of Chinese grandmothers, 婆婆 Popo is “inspired by and dedicated to all the 婆婆 and 婆婆 like figures in our lives”.
Hand-stitched as a traditional 8-page zine, 婆婆 Popo uses distinctly bright colours and playful imagery. Each page is dedicated to a different activity associated with Chinese grandmothers, from making pork rib congee to going to the market. Cartoon-style illustrations of iconic household objects such as tiger balm and mahjong pieces affectionately pay homage to the lives of Chinese grandmothers.
婆婆 Popo was the Runner-Up Design Zine winner of the 2022 Auckland Zinefest, with judges stating: "clear, concise and beautifully illustrated. This zine is full of love and personality. We are all now members of the Popo fan club". The zine was met with positive community feedback with social media comments referencing its relatability. 婆婆 Popo sold out completely in 2022.
