ABOUT

Where Are You From is a 2016 comic zine by fashion designer and zinemaker Nicola Luey that depicts “experiences of being a cultural minority”.

Presented in a traditional 8-page stapled zine format, Where Are You From utilises a simple black-and-white cartoon aesthetic to document personal experiences of microaggression. Though the zine is centred on Luey’s own experiences, her dialogue is dominated by the assumptions and statements of other people — speech bubbles from White characters take up the majority of the zine’s text, visually emphasising the prevalence of these situations. The use of irregular panels in the comic further evokes a sense of discomfort and forces the reader to actively engage with Luey’s experiences.

Where Are You From has been sold at Auckland Zinefest.
